Live Great White Shark Attacks

At least there is every chance of seeing one on Sunday. A monster swell is coming this way and the Mavericks break south of San Francisco, which I rather wisely swerved on my way south is going to be absolutely firing this weekend. The Mavericks Invitational event organisd by the great Jeff Clark himself, has been given the go ahead and the contest is being run from 8am Pacific Standard Time (which is 4pm UK time) and will be streamed live on the following link:

The great and the good of the surfing world have been handpicked to take part in the event e.g. Kelly Slater is competing in the first heat. This event is very similar to the Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay and only runs when it is HUGE so if you have any interest in surfing or would just like to see what the best of the best are capable of, I cant recommend it highly enough. The picture above was from the opening ceremony of the beginning of the waiting period back in November and this one is the prayer ceremony that the competitors held on the lee side of the Boneyard. (With good reason I might add!) Everybody will be surfing huge boards specially designed to cope with the big waves, and there are more than likely to be a few Pearson Arrows in the water, which have been created by my namesake. 🙂

I will be watching it online from my Las Vegas hotel room, nursing a hangover and hoping that nobody gets bitten while they are in the water waiting for waves looking an awful lot like sharkbait.
